18/07/2009: Drunken stupor

Perspective of the trad-songwriter

Perspective of the trad-songwriter

Last night I had a few drinks at home with friends and my brother, and it got me thinking. How many songs are inspired by drunkness? I started playing some music in my bedroom, and then it hit me. Most of the songs I hear about men in the Irish tradition holds the accusation of extreme alcoholism… or at least excessive drinking. One of my favourite songs, ‘Níl Sé Ina Lá’ is hilarious. I thought, ‘not all men are drunks’, and decided to get to work on a song on the joys (and woes) of ‘having a few’ from a lady’s man’s perspective. Just for the fun…

What’s your favourite song? @Robbi it! Will have the words up in a few days…

Áréir bhí cupla deoch agam le mo chuid cairde agus mo dhearthar, agus tháinig cupla smaointe chun áird. Caidé líon na n-amhrán atá spreagtha ag an dreamhlas? D’éist mé le cupla amhrán i mo sheomra leapa sula bhfuair mé freagra. Tá mé féinmhuiníneach á rá libh go bhfuil fuath ag stair na n-amhráin traidisiúnta agus ar na mná ar na fir… agus iad ag ól barraíocht gach uile oíche… dar leis na focail. ‘S é ‘Níl ‘na Lá’ ceann de na hamhráin is deise ar an domhan seo, tá sé greanmhar! Tá mé anois ag scríobh cupla véarsa ó thaobh fear heitritighnéasach, fá háilleacht agus gráin ‘an sar-uisce’. Tá mé ag baint sult as go dtí seo…

Caidé an amhrán ab’fhearr leatsa? Déan é “a @Robbiadh”! Beidh na focail agam gan mhoill…
